What’s fruity and spiced and keeps you warm? Mulled cider! In the winter, I survive on warm drinks of all kinds, but I’ve always had a particularly soft spot for the warm ciders and mulled wines sold at winter festivals and markets. To me, such drinks are the very definition of comfort; deeply flavored and super aromatic, they warm you up like a soft blanket.

Although mulled cider is a classic fall and winter beverage, my version incorporates the juice from three different citrus fruits, which nicely lift the cider’s flavor. This means you can serve it hot in the winter or over ice in the summer. Handy, right? When I serve this mulled citrus cider cold, I like to add a generous splash of sparkling cider or wine to each serving to make it even more refreshing. In the winter, I spike it with spiced rum and Cointreau to make it an extra-rewarding treat after playing in—or shoveling!—the snow for a couple of hours.

Whichever way you decide to serve it—hot or cold, spiked or virgin—this Mulled Citrus Cider is sure to become one of your signature drinks. Serve it to company alongside cocktail bites or after dessert or store a bottle of it in the fridge to enjoy an instant pick-me-up whenever you need it.

Serves 6 to 8 servings, or about 5 cups/1.25 L cider.

Mulled Citrus Cider

A deeply flavored, aromatic beverage made with apple cider, fresh citrus juice, and spices that you can serve hot or cold, virgin or spiked.

INGREDIENTS

4 cups (1 L) nonalcoholic apple cider
1/2 cup (125 ml) freshly squeezed, strained pink grapefruit juice (about 1/2 grapefruit)
1/2 cup (125 ml) freshly squeezed, strained orange juice (about 1 orange)
1/4 cup (60 ml) freshly squeezed, strained lemon juice (about 1 lemon)
1 tbsp (15 ml) honey, or more, to taste
1 1-in (2.5-cm) piece fresh ginger, peeled and sliced
Optional
1/4 cup (60 ml) Spiced Rum (such as Captain Morgan's)
1/4 cup (60 ml) orange liqueur, such as Cointreau, Grand Marnier, or Triple Sec
OR
Sparkling cider or wine, to taste
To serve (optional)
Additional grapefruit, orange, and/or lemon slices

METHOD

In a large saucepan over medium-high heat, combine all the ingredients, except the alcohol. Bring to a boil, reduce heat to low, and simmer for 10 minutes. Take off the heat and let rest for 10 minutes more.

Strain the cider, then stir in the liqueurs, if using. (If using sparkling cider or wine, add just before serving.)

SERVING

  • To serve warm, reheat gently, then serve in mugs garnished with citrus slices.
  • To serve cold, refrigerate for several hours, then serve over ice, garnished with citrus slices. Add a splash of sparkling cider or wine to each serving, if desired.

STORAGE

The Mulled Citrus Cider will keep refrigerated in glass bottles or an airtight container for up to a week. If you want to serve the citrus cider warm, gently reheat before serving (don't bring back to a full boil.)
