In a stockpot set over medium-high heat, combine all the ingredients, except the alcohol. Bring to a boil, reduce heat to low, and simmer for 10 minutes. Take off the heat and let rest for 10 minutes more.
Strain the cider, then stir in the liqueurs, if using. (If using sparkling cider or wine, add just before serving.)
SERVING OPTIONS
To serve warm, reheat gently, then serve in mugs garnished with citrus slices.
To serve cold, refrigerate for several hours, then serve over ice, garnished with citrus slices. Add a splash of sparkling cider or wine to each serving, if desired.
STORAGE: This Mulled Citrus Cider will keep refrigerated in glass bottles or glass jars for up to a week. If you want to serve the citrus cider warm, gently reheat before serving (no need to bring back to a full boil.)
