Help Me Discover the Best Kitchen Apps (and Win a Nexus 7 Tablet!)

Your New Best Friend in the Kitchen: Win a Nexus 7 Tablet // FoodNouveau.com

If you spied on me while I’m cooking in the kitchen, you’d likely see this scene: lots and lots of dirty dishes, food on the ground, a mountain of ingredients piled on the kitchen island, a corner of the butcher block kept clean for chopping – and a tablet set precariously on top of it all. Whether I use it to watch TV shows while I’m cooking or do a quick search for an ingredient substitution, my tablet is my best friend in the kitchen.

Up to now, the tablet I’ve been using is an iPad Mini, but recently Staples.ca have generously offered me the chance to test drive a brand new Nexus 7 tablet, which is Google’s latest and greatest release in the tablet world. While I’m still on the learning curve of using Android, I’m loving the way Google’s suite of tools (Gmail, Drive, Maps, etc.) is integrated into the operating system because they’re such an important part of my daily life, both as a freelancer and a food blogger. Also, I’m charmed by the tablet’s form factor: it’s as tall as my iPad Mini but a little narrower, which allows me to hold it comfortably with one hand. It also makes for a gorgeous wide-screen display once turned to the side. And speaking of gorgeous, the quality of the display is breathtaking: the colors are popping and the pixels are simply unnoticeable. Finally, the back of the tablet is covered in a matte black anti-scratch and anti-slip material, which allows me to use it without a protective case or cover, making it slimmer and lighter to carry.

While I’m still browsing through the Google Play store to discover Android apps that will make my life easier in the kitchen, I’m hoping you’ll help me through that process because guess what? I’m giving away one nifty Nexus 7 tablet to a lucky Canadian Food Nouveau reader, thanks to Staples.ca! Yes, you got that right: the winner of the tablet will be picked from the entries on this post, which makes your chances of winning incredibly high. Christmas has come early this year!

  1. I am an ios user and would love to switch. My boyfriend owns the nexus and I like the size and the apps that are offered. It would be so handy in the kitchen to use when I want to try a new recipe

  2. This tablet would make my life easier in the kitchen because I could have a wealth of recipes at my fingertips and get quick answers to questions while I’m cooking/baking such as substitutions.

  3. I am currently an android user and one of the good apps I came across is Big Oven.
Thanks for the chance:) Happy Holidays!

  5. I’m one of the few left on this tech savvy planet who doesn’t own a tablet. This would make teachning my daughter how to cook fun!

  6. don’t have tablet yet but would be nice to use for cooking as my friend show me youtube video of cooking receipt and just have to follow and pause :)

  7. I have a hunch that the tablet will give me quicker answers than searching through the Joy of Cooking, and sometimes you need an answer quick!

  8. J’aime son petit format et sa facilité de manipulation, ce serait très agréable à avoir.

  9. It would be awesome to have a device readily available to check recipes and do research while in the kitchen cooking and baking. Would make if much easier to refer to the recipes!

  11. I’ve been fiddling with my co-workers and friends’ android phones and I must say there’s alot of features that I find much better.

  13. I got a lot of cooking apps, but the one I use the most is Paprika for iOS. It’s an app to carry all your recipes in one place. You can use it to write your own recipies or download from all major sites, both English and French.

  14. If you spied on me while I’m cooking in the kitchen, you’d likely see this scene: lots and lots of clean dishes because I wash it as it comes; no food on the ground, because my ol’ dog has a blast cleaning it up; fresh & yummy ingredients neatly arranged on the kitchen counter; a corner of the butcher block kept always clean for chopping – and…me with my apron wishing I had a tablet instead of my cooking books getting filthy and not so practical while doing the job… ;)

  15. I have yet to call myself a proud tablet owner – but as magazines such as Canadian Living and Bon Appétit are available at $1.99, I’m pretty sure I would become addicted to those!

  16. Hello, having a tablet would beat having to go in the other room where the computer is and try to follow a receipe from there!

  17. As I don’t have a tablet yet (but my bf does… and he won’t share it with me!), I don’t know much about the cooking apps. But I’d loooooove to get my hands on the Nexus 7 just to subscribe to Next Issue. All the back catalog from Bon Appétit, what a treat! I could browse for hours on that.
Oh, and I could have access to my online recipes at a touch of a hand, next to my kitchen counter, instead of running back and forth from my desk to my kitchen, scribbling half the recipe on an old piece of paper (I’m quite old school…). :)
