Shopping Gourmand: Whimsical

Writing this post from Paris, I’m surrounded by city’s beauty and everything it has to offer. It’s easy to be inspired by the beautiful decorations, Christmas markets and special displays put together by most shops around Paris’ magical neighborhoods. Because I have dreamt to come to Paris since I was a child, and because every time I come back, it makes me all warm inside and feel like a little girl again, this week’s theme for shopping gourmand is Whimsical.

Whimsical objects have this special quality to make everybody smile. Dot some of these special creations all around you and there may never be a gray day again.

Note: I am not making a dime presenting you these finds. I just think great indie shops and artisans deserve to be talked about. And I love to get an excuse to shop!

Shopping Gourmand: Paper

I have been quiet last week because I was visiting my good friend Melanie in Toronto. Together we went to the One-of-a-Kind Christmas Show & Sale and I was impressed! So many talented artisans, so many gift ideas, so many new things on my wish list! I have gathered dozens of business cards but unfortunately, after visiting all of the websites listed on the cards, I found out that most did not feature an online store (or featured an empty store), which is a real shame because I have no other way to spread the word! Many artisans left messages saying they would fill up their stores after Toronto’s show, so I have great hope that I will be able to share my finding with you in the near future.

In the meantime, let’s talk about paper. As a graphic designer, I have a natural obsession with everything paper. I’m one of those who fear the day when books (the paper kind, not electronic ones) go out of fashion.

New Feature! Shopping Gourmand

Today I’m introducing a new feature: Shopping Gourmand!

Etsy is a site that needs no introduction. While it contains wonderful finds, they often get drowned amongst dozens (hundreds! thousands!) of other items that are, let’s be honest, much less interesting. If you don’t have time to browse through the site but would still like to discover new gadgets, handcrafted creations or one-in-a-million objects, Shopping Gourmand is for you.

Published twice a month, each post will feature 9 interesting finds that fit into a chosen theme. While my first finds all come from Etsy, I will introduce talented designers and artists from around the world that sell their creations on other sites as well. Right on time for the Holidays, I hope Shopping Gourmand will help you find original, inspiring and affordable gifts.

Note: I am not making a dime presenting you these finds. I just think great indie shops and artisans deserve to be talked about.

Shops, Restaurants, Gelaterie, Tours and More: Favorite Addresses in Rome

Shops, Restaurants, Gelaterie, Tours and More: Favorite Addresses in Rome

A couple of weeks have gone by since I came back from Rome so I’ve had some time to digest all the information I gathered and to sort out my pictures. Before flying to the Eternal City, I did extensive research; reading guidebooks, food essays and cookbooks about Roman cuisine, as well as countless websites and blogs. While I cannot aspire to publish an “Ultimate Rome” list (which would probably take a lifetime to achieve!), I’m confident that this is a list of places where foodies visiting Rome simply must go. When I go to a new city, I like to have a shortlist of sure shots, places to go where I know I won’t be disappointed. This is such a list: start with these fantastic addresses to get a taste of Rome, then stray your own way and discover your favorite spots. You’ll come back dreaming of the next time you can walk and taste your way through the streets of Rome again.

In My Suitcase From… Paris

In My Suitcase From… Paris

What’s in my suitcase when I come back from a trip? Edible things. When abroad, I love to visit grocery stores the way others do souvenir shops and I always end up with small jars or packages of things I want to experience with back home.

“In my suitcase from…” will be a recurring theme on FoodNouveau. I will post about my findings right when I come back from my trips and of course update you when I cook with it. If you have suggestions of what to do with anything I bring back, please comment because frankly, sometimes I barely know what it is! Traveling is about discoveries, no?

So a couple of days ago I came back from a trip to Paris during the course of which I visited my usual gourmet shops: G. Detou, Bovida, Dehillerin and Mora, all in the 2nd arrondissement, right by Les Halles (see the address book below).

My Favorite Thing in… Paris

My Favorite Thing in… Paris

People first go to Paris for its clichés: climbing to the top of the Eiffel Tower, losing an afternoon people watching on the terrace of a café, listening to an accordion player on the steps of the Sacré-Coeur, wandering along the Seine, getting lost in the Louvre. These are all great getting-to-know Paris activities, but as with anywhere you get to go several times, gradually you find your off-the-tourist-trail favorite spots: your favorite bakery, bistro, street, park or arrondissement.

I have to say that I’m not objective at all about Paris; I’m literally in love with the place for its qualities and its faults (that’s true love, isn’t it?). I can’t wait to go back there again (soon, soon), and in the meantime, I dream about my favorite things in the City of Light: wandering in the Jardins du Luxembourg early in the morning just after it opened; sitting on the steps of the Église Sainte-Madeleine, nibbling on some snack I just bought at Fauchon; grocery shopping at La Grande Épicerie; and eating macarons.
