Toronto: A Tale of Nostalgia and a Tasting Menu

Toronto: A Tale of Nostalgia and a Tasting Menu

Toronto is a city that’s very special to me: back in 2004, when I was studying translation, I had the chance to go and live there for a year as an exchange student. My campus was in North York, a very elegant northern Toronto neighborhood where some of the most extravagant houses are built for the rich and famous. The main pavilion of the campus was itself an old and romantic manoir with a rose garden and a small forest surrounding it – exceptional for a location so close to downtown. While I was living in a humble dorm room, I was surrounded by beautiful places to visit, restaurants to try and shops to spend my money in.

Over the next years, E and I went back to Toronto regularly, for good time’s sakes but also because we grew to really love the city. This year, my ex-associate and very good friend Melanie and her family moved to a Western Toronto suburb so I took the opportunity to book a visit to the Queen City.

A Year Later: Guilo Guilo, Paris

A Year Later: Guilo Guilo, Paris

It’s hard to realize that a year ago we were coming back from our five-month stay in Paris. A year, really, already? Time flies: it’s not just a clichéd expression, it’s a reality.

Throughout our stay in Paris, one of our gourmand friends kept on talking about the Guilo Guilo, a Japanese restaurant in Montmartre. Of course, he was praising it, and to hear him describe the meals he had had over there was mouthwatering. It was clear we didn’t have a choice but to go there at least once during our stay. Some time by the end of April, my friend tried to get a reservation. Turns out Guilo Guilo, not only being very popular but also rather small, is pretty hard to book. The only night we could catch the last table (at 9:30 PM, which is best because nobody else is waiting for it, allowing you to take your time enjoying the meal) was the day right before we left.

Haute Dining in New York

Haute Dining in New York

New York City is most certainly the US’ food capital. It seems like all of the greatest and most well-known chefs, those I’ve watched on TV for many years, whose books I’ve read or whom I admire for their achievements have one (or more!) restaurants in the Big Apple. Wolfgang Puck, Mario Batali, Daniel Boulud, Alfred Portale, Jean-Georges Vongerichten, Eric Ripert, Thomas Keller, Anthony Bourdain are all synonymous with great food here. I have to admit I’m a bit of a chef groupie (ask E who once pointed behind me exclaiming Jamie Oliver was right there at a tradeshow in Europe – I almost fainted), so when I go to New York, I bring my “to-try” list of the city’s greatest restaurants. I may be guilty of planning my meals more than my visits!

The Union Square Market

My list is long, but I’m crossing the names one by one. I had the pleasure to eat at the following two restaurants in 2007, and they remain among my absolute favorites.

My Birthday Dinner at Le Canard Goulu

My Birthday Dinner at Le Canard Goulu

Last year, my birthday was exceptional in every way possible: it was my 30th, I was in Paris with E and we were just starting our 5 month stay in France’s capital – I had dreamed about it for so long! I knew my birthday would be great, but it also meant I would be away from most of my friends and family. I figured it would be a quiet birthday, but that was before my two best friends surprised me by flying over to Paris for a weekend just to celebrate with me!

Fast-forward to 2010: I knew Paris would be difficult to beat and that it was only my 31th, but who wants a boring birthday? I was on a quest to find the perfect place to celebrate…

Enter Le Canard Goulu: le Canard Goulu is a Muscovy duck farm located on the South side of the St.
